What is Internal Family Systems/IFS?
Welcome new insights today
IFS is a form of therapy that helps you see inside yourself. When we struggle, we often think something is 'wrong with us' or we are bad, but IFS teaches us that this is not the case. Just like IFS creator Dr. Richard Schwartz's aptly named book "No Bad Parts", we can understand our thoughts and actions as each of us being composed of parts that are trying to serve or protect us in our daily lives -- even when we might not like how our parts are going about it.
IFS often involves visualization and even creativity, but don't worry if you have trouble with these because they are not actually required in order to successfully benefit from IFS. IFS is often combined with EMDR to facilitate the process, but it is used on its own as well. It can also help with dissocation.
Confused but curious? That makes sense. Reach to learn more.
What is Parts Work?
Parts Work is the umbrella term for engaging in tools like IFS or something similar called Ego State Therapy, and generally working with the concept of clients having different parts of themselves, both current and from their childhood, life history, and experiences.
Ego State Therapy is an approach that I more often combine with EMDR than use as a stand-alone method. It frequently involves connecting with our younger selves, often our traumatized ones, to facilitate healing.
Parts Work in general, not necessarily IFS or Ego State Therapy in particular, can be employed by therapists to help clients when they are dealing with multiple or opposing emotions that are getting in the way. For example, it can help those with mixed emotions about coming for counselling to explore their experience and become more willing to engage. It can also aid a client in separating the problem they are facing from the core of their person, helping them to see that they are not "bad" because of the feelings and struggles they are experiencing, and to look at their challenge from a new lens.
