What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy

EMDR Therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, is a highly researched therapy and effective treatment for trauma.  It does not require homework or a lot of hard work on the part of the client, other than participation and teamwork with the therapist in the sessions.

Eye movements are often used in the treatment, but other options are also available, making this therapy an option even for those who are blind or have other challenges.

Another benefit is that if you have experienced severe trauma and are afraid to put words to your experience, you can do EMDR without having to talk about the trauma out loud.

EMDR Therapy in Vancouver can be helpful for:

  • car accidents, being attacked by a dog, or having a disturbing medical experience

  • sexual abuse and assaults

  • being hit, yelled at, neglected, and/or called stupid as a child, and/or seeing a parent being abused or using drugs/alcohol

  • an abusive marriage/relationship

  • when you feel you should be able to "just get over it" but for some reason you can't

  • nightmares and flashbacks

  • thinking you are a bad person from being told this as a child

  • hearing about and/or witnessing others being hurt

  • bullying

  • grief that doesn't seem to be healing

  • phobias, OCD, and anxiety that started from trauma
